Definitely works. My husband was trying to figure it out one day, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE IHOP he didn't figure out that the hook on the side sets off the alarm so he pulls it and the whole restaurant is watching because he was in total panic. and couldn't get the pen back. So, in case anyone is wondering, the big "button-like thing" (as he said) isn't a button. This is a speaker. So yes it works. Yes, you will have a heart attack if you don't expect it, and no, don't hesitate unless you are in real danger.
