Update: Stumbled across Seagate Exos 12TB with helium filling. $264. Slightly less noise (different sound compared to Toshiba when writing/searching), slightly faster random selection and thus writing/reading and 2 degrees Celsius lower temperatures. Decided to leave Exos. 5 year guarantee. But note the Seagate warranty: it does NOT start from the date of purchase, but from the date the retailer received it from Seagate. Bought Toshiba and Seagate Ironwolf 8TB. Both compared on a Qnap NAS drive. Both worked fine. Reading/writing data produces the same level of noise. The Seagate was only 2-3 dB louder. In terms of temperature, Qnap showed that the Toshiba runs around 2-3 degrees Celsius cooler. SATA Current/Max Speed Toshiba shows 6Gb/s, Seagate 3 for Current and 6 for Max. Seagate Sequential Read/Write showed around 245-250Mbps and random around 150Mbps. Toshiba showed 237-240 and 170, respectively. Toshiba was better packaged for shipping and less prone to damage in transit. The Seagate came in a cheap carbon box. Price-wise: The Toshiba 8TB was slightly cheaper ($175) and the Seagate Ironwolf 8TB ($195 on sale, $205 regular). There were no errors on either disk. Both options are good. You can't go wrong with either one.
