My current NAS drive

I bought four of these drives for my personal NAS use. These are now my standard NAS drives since WD acquired HGST. They're not the cheapest out there, but they're reasonable, especially when they go on sale. So far no one has let me down. Until something else changes in the world of hard drives, I will continue to buy them in the future.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Big and bulky

I have a QNAP and a Synology NAS. The HDWG160XZSTA is compatible with both NAS, but the model number differs from the one stated on the box: HDWG160UZSVA is not on either company's list of approved drives. Sent back one set, same problem with the second. I tried the first drives, they were not recognized by the NAS. It's not really the drive's fault, I'm pretty sure they work great in the right application.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Upgrade available

Bought two, both failed

Bought two of these for my new NAS, plugged them in and the NAS said no drive installed. Had to buy a 3.5" SATA to USB adapter to find out what's wrong with my PC. The PC sees the drive but asks me to initialize it. However, when I tried this, I got an "Invalid Function" error. I've spent a lot of time on the internet trying to find out what's going on and after too much time I've come to the conclusion that they were roasted on arrival. BOTH! Update: Bought 2 more drives from another brand and

So far so good Best in Computers & Accessories

I use two of these in my Isilon NL400 with TrueNAS Core (12.0-U1). I bought twelve 8TB Barracuda drives (which I expected to die) to create a zpool with the expectation over time replacing junk Barracudas with decent drives. So far these Toshiba drives are working as expected and are CMR. Receiver went fast and they still work. It's hard to tell if they're durable or not as they're fairly new. If they die quicker than expected I will update the rating. The price is probably the cheapest of anyโ€ฆ

Ignore reviews from novice hobbyists who don't know the difference between NAS drives and desktop drives. When used as intended in an eight-drive NAS, the Toshiba N300 series is a very good drive. It has hardware and firmware features specifically configured for NAS use, where it may be subject to vibration and heat from other drives that most desktop drives are totally unsuitable for. To be a "good neighbor," it must also reduce the amount of heat and vibration it generates. Seagate andโ€ฆ

BUYER WARNING! When the unit arrived, it immediately stuttered with the classic Seagate "Click of Death". I've tried getting a replacement but it seems that even though they claim to have a 2 year guarantee, they won't repair or exchange, just refund part of your money. And only if you can prove that you bought the device NEW from them or from an "authorized reseller". They DO NOT REPAIR "TRADING ROMS". This is not how the industry should do business, in my opinion. I like Toshiba's performance

Toshiba N300 8TB vs. Seagate Ironwolf 8TB

Update: Stumbled across Seagate Exos 12TB with helium filling. $264. Slightly less noise (different sound compared to Toshiba when writing/searching), slightly faster random selection and thus writing/reading and 2 degrees Celsius lower temperatures. Decided to leave Exos. 5 year guarantee. But note the Seagate warranty: it does NOT start from the date of purchase, but from the date the retailer received it from Seagate. Bought Toshiba and Seagate Ironwolf 8TB. Both compared on a Qnap NASโ€ฆ
