We had some expensive trees planted in the front yard. The rain was heavy but sporadic and I wanted to water them correctly. This meter reaches down into the root ball for useful readings. It saved me from killing the trees by over watering. It is all metal, but still a little fragile. Don't twist it while it is stuck in the ground, that might tear out some wires inside the unit. Installing the battery requires a screwdriver to undo the screws. Calibration is not complex. I don't know how to describe the accuracy because the calibration method is very subjective. However, the meter reading is quite repeatable, that is important.
