Got this to find the ceiling joists to hang a chair. Found out my ceilings are lath and plaster and this thing is a pain in the you know what because it kept detecting the lath boards instead of joists. I set it to deep detect and it still had trouble, so I ended up going into my attic to confirm I got the bolts into the joist. I already have a (old) Stanley stud finder. It finds the center of a stud, but not so much accurate with it. So, I did some research and ended up buying the VIVREAL wall scanner, thinking it as a replacement for the old Stanley stud finder.So far, I found the VIVREAL accurately locates stud and I like the fact that it shows the center and edges of a stud. It has a comfortable grip and has a clear, helpful LCD display with detection mode and cues along with battery indicator.As for Cons, VIVREAL

I've only used for studs. I find that the readings are a little confusing when finding the edge. The center mark seems to be accurate however the edge mark's are off. The edge marks sometimes go on for as much as a quarter inch but usually about an 8th. Making it seem like the stud is 2in thick when it's actually 1.5in.I use the below to accurately measure a 1.5in stud1) measure from left to right2) move to right, continuing to move even though the arrow and edge bar appear. this seemed great at first. it was relatively accurate and could find AC. the accuracy started declining about 6 months in, 8 months in and it detects studs that aren't there and it can't find studs that are there. it also randomly finds AC current if you move it too fast. it's absolutely useless now.

Once I found the weird square battery it needed, months later it app appears to work well. The screw driver I got off ebay didn't have a part necessary for ot to work so I can't tell you if it's finding studs yet or not. It could be finding pipes. Idk yet .

Nice bright screen, easy to use. Move slowly with it, it will show you both edges of the stud and the center. Got this for mounting TVs to the wall. Worked pefectly! Would buy again.

I bought this stud/line detector in preparation for an electrical rewiring job I'm going to take on in my house. The detector seems to work well given the price, but there are some caveats I've found while using it.#1) Try to do the calibration in an area of the wall where you know there are no studs or electrical. When the battery is strong, it seems to find things quite easily, although there were a few times were I had to go over the surface a few times because the readings were slightly different each time.
