Review on πŸ“€ Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black): Advanced Features & Performance (2009 Model) by Sean Maples

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great value for money and video quality, some issues.

Bought this box as it has direct internet connection and Netflix and is a good buy for the price. It's essentially an internet computer that also plays BluRay. Lived with it for about a month and am mostly happy with the performance. I ran a 75 foot 10/100 cable from our router there and connected it through a switch to share the connection with the Dish DVR. When streaming A Christmas Carol from Netflix, the quality was close to DVD (16:9) and the streaming was flawless. I was impressed that I can even reenact scenes. Playback depends on the quality of the film - the 1970's Superman film was lousy, 4:3 with poor resolution, but other films like Code are back to DVD quality and I expect they'll get better. There's plenty of other material available to play both online and on YouTube, but the playback image is smaller than you'd expect for these lower resolutions. You can spend all day just harnessing the power of the internet. This requires a (free) registration with the Sony Bravia service. BluRay and DVD playback is great, and as is usual with these Sony boxes, they'll play any disc you throw at them. It starts up a bit slower than the DVD unit we replaced, but not by much. The 10 second snooze button is very handy and it's fairly easy to navigate. When using an HDMI connection, the BluRay video quality is equal to or better than the HD reception quality from the Dish Network DVR. The surround sound is also great. This box is packed to the brim with features, tweaks, and tweaks, and I doubt I'll ever get halfway through it. First boot up with an internet connection found it needed a firmware update, downloaded, installed and watched the DVD for 10 minutes - very easy to use. Annoyances: Some menu popups disappear too slowly. - For example, after selecting a scene, the selection menu blocks the bottom of the screen for about 5 seconds before disappearing. The BD-Live feature doesn't work very well, it doesn't work with either the 2GB or 4GB SanDisk flash drives I'm using, and it crashes when loading the HD trailer. The download speed is also very slow, so this feature is not very comfortable to use and I gave up on it after the first few tries. Can't figure out why as the Netflix stream is ok but I didn't really miss it. An eject button on the remote control would also be nice - I miss that on older players. And as someone mentioned, if you turn off the power in the middle of a ride, it forgets where it was. I believe most of these can probably be fixed by future firmware updates (there have been at least two more since install). All in all a great purchase and I am very happy with this product. Five stars for quality and functionality, minus half a star for inconveniences.
