Very easy to clean in the aquarium water when changing the water. To make sure you don't contaminate the tank with all the dirt this thing sucks up, I recommend putting a plastic bag over it to get water out of the tank, squeezing it into the bag to clean it, and it never rinse under water tap. Clean it only with water from the tank. The tank is healthy, looks great and has been installed for a long time. Great air filter for the money. I use this along with a small table top sun canister and another smaller 2 sponge filter in a 30 gallon fresh water tank. I bought them to increase air exchange with bubbles and 2 foam filters to increase flow because my plants are growing very quickly and I don't know how to prune in time. When I clean this filter in the effluent from the tank, I squeeze it until the water turns chocolate brown and then just reattach it to the bottom of the filter.
