Bought this item for hiking. I will use it as a bear repellent on the trail. It's kind of an experiment because while I want it for bears, I don't want it to work every time a rodent comes by. Let's see how it works. I checked it as soon as I received the goods. I removed a small piece of plastic from the battery compartment. I installed it on the back porch. I put on my best hearing protection. I waited 35 seconds after opening the PIR motion sensor cover. Then I approached him. At first I thought I had really great headphones. The sound wasn't deafening while I was wearing them. Then I took off my hearing protection and my ears still didn't rupture. I would describe the alarm sound as annoying, which is good but in no way disables it. Since I'm not buying this to protect myself from baddies in dark garages, this works well enough for me. If I wanted something that would protect me from the bad guys, I could look for something louder.
