I had this error message: esptool.FatalError: Failed to connect to ESP8266: Packet header timed out. But then I realized that I had soldered the reset and software switches in the header incorrectly. I soldered them on the back and didn't rotate the picture with the guide in mind so I soldered them to the wrong contacts. Frustrated and given up, I went back, found my mistake, fixed it, and now it's working as intended. Works well. I just wish I wanted to do this (serial communication with another Arduino based device) and transmit this information to the internet to display on my phone. Fabulous!
