Cheap plastic, good size, three strands. The battery compartment is made of cheap, thin plastic that is difficult to open. When you finally open it, you end up breaking the thin plastic tabs that hold it in place. I ended up sealing the battery compartment with tape to keep it from closing since the trim is outside. We had a lot of rain before Halloween and no water got into the battery compartment and I can live without a light for a few years. Some of the uniforms had a slight thread, but they were easy to put back on. If you want something cheap and can only last a few years at a reasonable price, look no further. I didn't wear them every night. You'll be on for maybe 48 hours total and still have plenty of battery life.
