July 05, 2021 Updated Rating : My opinion has improved after continuing to use this scanner. I have raised my rating to 4 stars. I can recommend it with reservations. My initial complaint was that the 8MP saves JPEG images at 72dpi, which is far too low for good quality archival copies. However, you can increase the resolution up to 300 dpi using image editing software such as Photoshop Elements. to resize and get very acceptable results. Of course, this takes time and negates much of the advantage of using this device over a flatbed scanner. This means that converting photos to digital images becomes a two-step process. For that reason, and because it can't save images in TIFF format, I don't give it a perfect rating. But I like the ease of use, and the photo editing step can be left for another time. A resolution of 8 MP is sufficient to create 4 x 6 images from a 4 x 6 print at 300 dpi. They should display well on a computer monitor but look poor on a large TV. I'll try the 16MP setting, but I doubt the interpolation will improve anything. Some similar scanners have a slightly higher native resolution, like 14MP. It would be an improvement, but this one does the job for me and the price was good. Initial Review, July 04, 2021: I thought I really had something when I discovered this scanner at Revain. The ability to convert both prints and slides/film to a digital format is rare. I was a bit disappointed that it could only produce JPEG and not TIFF format images, but that was clear from the listing. What wasn't clear from the listing was that the resolution is only 72 dots per inch (dpi). This is not a high quality image. I expected at least 300 dpi. If I had known that, I wouldn't have bothered. JPEG images are hopelessly grainy for my taste. You may not be as picky as I am. On the positive side, this scanner is very easy to use and fast. I can imagine storing hundreds of photos in a day and that's a very attractive feature. My flatbed scanner takes a few days. The slide tray does not keep slides centered, but can be easily modified to fix this. I glued toothpicks along the bottom edge and it does a good job. The print substrate works fine, but you need to be sure your prints are curled or they won't focus evenly. I believe there may be some outside light entering the unit, so it's best to keep the room as dark as possible. Do not expose the device to direct light. I think that explains the light streaks which some users have commented. I will not send it back. There is a lot to be said for being able to quickly scan lower-quality images. But to make copies for safekeeping, I need to find another way. I think that explains the light streaks that some users have commented. I will not send it back.
