The Lo indicator lights up if you don't get close enough and it doesn't work outside as it appears to be showing an ambient temperature (it was 100 degrees outside) when I was outside before and people were checking them coming to a small gathering. Suggested Instruction: Press the power button and wait until the dotted lines appear, hold it approx. There will be a beep for 1-2 seconds with the temperature. I was a little worried it wouldn't be easy to read, but it's perfectly clear and vivid.
