I recently bought a 95% renovation in Chicago. The plumbing that was done is phenomenal so I was quite surprised to find 1/2 inch of water in half of my newly renovated basement after our first summer flood last month. I uncovered the sump and in fact it was completely full. I fished my hand in the water until I found the float and shook it a few times which eventually caused the pump to turn on. He drained the pool and drained the water that had accumulated in the suction pipes, leaving me free to push through all the stagnant water in the bottom and spend days cleaning up the mess. When it rained again that weekend, I immediately went to the bathroom. Basement and sure enough I watched the pool fill up quickly but the float wouldn't restart the pump so I sat on the floor in the utility room in the middle of the night for 3 hours banging the float with a piece of wood every 5 minutes to turn on the pump. As soon as the rain stopped I pulled out the pump to find it was a Flotec FPZS33T. I disassembled the float switch, cleaned all the contacts, reassembled the switch, checked all the seals, cleaned the inlet and put the pump back in the bowl. I ran my garden hose into the pool and successfully activated the float switch. I was very satisfied with my comfortable work. problem solved correctly? Not right. We survived two more decent rains without any problems. The pump seemed to work fine. Flash flooding and tornadoes threatened the entire Chicagoland area Wednesday night (two days ago). When it started raining I went down to the basement and everything seemed fine. After about 20 minutes I returned to the basement and found that the basin was 2/3 full but the pump was still running at full capacity because I not only heard it but also heard the water flowing down the drain pipe . I sat there for the next 20 minutes and watched as the pool slowly filled to capacity and the inlet pipes shut off again. An hour after it started raining, the water started pooling on the ground again, not as much as the first time because the pump was actually on, but strong enough to really annoy me. This pump was less than a year old and already had a faulty switch and absolutely couldn't keep up with a typical summer thunderstorm! I ordered a Wayne CDU980E 3/4 HP drain pump. The pump came yesterday afternoon. I installed it in 15 minutes because the length of fittings and pipe are perfectly matched. I tested it and it worked great. We had another torrential downpour last night and the new pump worked like a champ! This thing didn't even sweat, and it's actually a tad quieter than the other pump! I am very happy. Great product and incredibly easy to install! The Wayne pump is only $30 more than the Flotec pump and is much better designed and MUCH more powerful. I'll keep an eye on the work over the summer and report back if anything changes. The good news for Flotec is that I can't throw away their garbage pump right away. I'm thinking of building an outdoor pool that will collect rainwater from my gutter and then pump it to a larger water trap in my yard to water my plants. So yes, this pump will spend the rest of its life in my garden pumping rainwater for my veggies, but I will never let it come anywhere near my house again!
