Bought because of the brand (we had a faucet) and lots of positive reviews but it's coming back because it's loud and smells bad. First the noise: For an ultrasonic humidifier, the penguin is really loud. We can't measure decibels, but the constant hum is loud enough to disturb sleep. almost as noisy as old-school humidifiers with fans. Second, the smell: not only does it have that nasty smell of cheap plastic, but it also has a faint skunk smell when you're around. The smell of plastic quickly fills the room, even with the door open. We've tried cleaning it with vinegar and water and running it for a long time on different days hoping it will dissipate with use, but it still stinks. On closer inspection, I noticed that the smell wasn't coming from the water tank so much as from the base/motor area, which of course cannot be cleaned. Our teardrop humidifier recently broke - a victim of my 3 year old. We liked this humidifier (bought in 2009) best because it was very quiet (just the occasional gurgling sound, no loud hum) and produced copious amounts of moisture (with a handy adjustable nozzle/top cone). Two minor inconveniences when falling: 1) it is difficult to clean the nooks and crannies inside the tank, and 2) no matter how carefully we move and pull the tank from the base to fill it, water will splash. needed a towel to work with. I've read that the drip humidifier has been redesigned since ours was made and I suspect if I buy a new one it might have penguin problems. The base and tank are essentially the same, except for the "legs" and "head" that have been added to the penguin. So if Crane moves production to China, for example, it's possible that the new units will have noise and odor issues. I'm switching to another brand.
