This is a useful tool - especially if your needs are geared towards it's strengths. You can use this for streaming (I use OBS on PC), which is pretty cool. Hook up a camera to the HDMI input (or use one of the included adapters to stream other content) and you can output it to your PC via the USB interface (micro USB, not USB C). As a bonus, you get a monitor to view your video that will be going to your PC. The computer reads it like it would a webcam, complete with audio. There is very little CPU usage with this connected. You can also use this to record locally on the unit itself. So hook up a camera, VHS/DVD, or other media unit and you can record to an SD card or USB drive. No additional computer is needed. It cannot record AND work as a webcam at the same time. It would have been really cool if it did.The monitor doesn't have any field monitor settings, like Zebra, focus peaking, or anything like that. It is a preview montior only.It does allow for recording of external audio via 3.5mm jacks. It has an Aux, Line, and Mic in. There is a Line Out as well. You can connect headphones to the Line Out for referencing. There is a built in speaker to the unit. The volume that controls the speaker also controls the line out. The speaker is not disabled by having the Line Out activated. This is a bit annoying as it can create a feedback loop with the camera audio and the preview audio. The unit is super easy to use. You could read the manual, but it's not required. They do note a billion times that it won't record HDCP content and that you can work around this by purchasing an HDMI splitter that strips the HDCP restrictions. The manual even has a link to a recommended one.It comes with cords and adapters to connect a variety of devices.HEADSUP: It smells when you first get it. It's a chemical smell that reminds me of the dentist. It also irratated my hands the fist time I used it. I wiped the unit down and let it air out for a few days. The smell was greatly reduced and it no longer irratates my hands to hold it.This is a good unit if you are needing to convert a signal to USB and need a monitor to go with it. Or if you want to convert old home movies to a digital format without a computer. If you only plan on using this to convert your signal to USB there are better options for much less. It all depends on what your needs are.
