There wasn't always a free pocket. This holster works well for me. My Motorola G7 phone has a protective case that I like. The phone and its case fit perfectly in this holster. I especially like the carabiner. This allows the holster to move out of the way when I'm seated. Pleasant to drive. One thing I didn't think about when I bought it is that it clips to my tackle bag when I'm fishing and keeps my phone handy at all times.
