Installed to use as a charger for my motorcycle. Noon at 40Β° N. Sulfate-lead-acid battery. I tried the same thing (with a battery I had stored for several years) and encountered the same symptom: the battery charged for a day and then quickly ran out. This is because there is virtually no capacity left in sulfate batteries. Replacing the battery solved the problem and the new battery doesn't drop below 12.9V (peak charge voltage for a lead acid battery) all night. consumes 22mA. It would still take nearly 19 days without sun to fully discharge a small 10Ah battery, and with a 1A charge, just 32 minutes of midday sunshine would be enough to pay for itself, even with a drained controller.
