People say the pieces smell when you first take them out. There is, but it smells like a tree that was frankly recently felled. Planting it for a few days will solve this problem before putting it in a cage. Platforms and perches are good, the bird likes it very much. The only thing missing from my package were two additional metal round shapes to attach the pieces to the bars. These and they aren't easy to clean if your bird poops on them a lot (mine does this with a small platform) but that's just part of bird keeping.
