I was originally given two large mats to put in front of the litter box on the dining room carpet (don't ask). I use cat jaw and the rugs are great for trapping dirt. You simply take the mat and shake the filler back into the box. Simply ingenious and smart. But what saved my life was that the cat urinated on the mat twice (last time ten minutes ago which was the reason for this review). It didn't penetrate the carpet. I gently bend the urine-covered mat, take it outside and take care of it there. By the way, yes you can hand wash the carpet if this happens to you. I suggest either taking it outside and hosing it off thoroughly or doing it in the bathroom. Let it air dry. Then use Anti-Icky Poo (unscented spray) and soak thoroughly - let dry. Leave it on for about a week (you can use it in the meantime if you need it) and then give it a final rinse/air dry. Or you can do what I did - buy another one. I have done both. Excellent, durable
