I have not purchased a similar product so I cannot compare. It sat on my daughter's bed for a few months and didn't tear even though her sheet slipped off a couple of times, and she slept right on top of this bedspread. Because it is impenetrable, it is not too "plastic". They seem to have done a good job of making it more fabric-like. You can minimize any "plastic" feel or noise by wearing a quilted mattress topper over it. It didn't break, my daughter didn't complain about being bitten like she used to, it didn't break. I can't comment on the waterproofness as I didn't get wet. But after a few months of use everything is looking good and seems close enough to the fabric that they can probably do something similar to what a liquid barrier should be. Remember they can only do what is necessary to keep everything out, including liquids, and still be soft.
