I have tried many feeders over the years but have mostly been unhappy with uneven portion sizes due to the rotating drum running out of feed. Although this Eheim Twin Feeder doesn't like big flakes and clogs easily, I've found Tetra Crisps to work perfectly because they're smaller and more uniform in size. Unfortunately we like to winter in Florida and this feeder only lasts 4 or 5 days (at best) with 3 feedings a day for my big hungry fish. I have designed an extra reservoir that sits on top of the feeder and adds about 2 months of extra food to what is normally a limited supply of food. That works great! After 4 weeks of testing I figured I could easily swap out this 13oz tank for an additional larger tank for an even longer vacation. For those interested. I took an empty 130 oz plastic ketchup bottle (water bottles would probably work too) and a small 1.5 x 4 inch piece of balsa wood that was lying around the house. Obviously any thin hard material like plastic, metal or wood will do. I wrapped duct tape around the balsa wood to prevent moisture from damaging the wood. I then cut out two small notches on one side of the tree to accommodate the Eheim door hinges which would then allow this new door cover to fit snugly when stacked on one side of the Eheim feeder when the feeder lid is open . I then glued the ketchup lid (threaded) onto the new balsa lid. I trimmed the side of the lid a bit (before gluing) so when I cut a hole in the lid it ended up in the middle of one of the feed tanks. Then I drilled a dime hole in the center of the canopy and balsa top. This hole was too small and the tetra crisps were still sticking together. I enlarged the hole to about the size of a nickel with a Dremmel grinder and everything works fine. I also made a small 1/16 inch hole in the bottom of the ketchup bottle to make sure the vacuum wouldn't prevent the food from falling out. Luckily the new vent prevents the vacuum and is small enough that the food doesn't fall out. It doesn't fall out when I unscrew the bottle to fill. I added some rubber bands to keep everything in place over the feeder. It works so well I think it will even work with flakes although I haven't tested this Will be switching to a larger aquarium bottle for feeding our fish over a 3 month holiday Even better the lid is the same size so I don't have to build a new lid to damage the Eheim TwinFeeder in any way and I can still use both. The downside is that you need to have enough space above the tank to accommodate the height of the feeder plus the height of the additional ketchup tank. The picture shows the final product.
