Review on ๐Ÿ’ก Enhance Your Network Control with Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Smart Power Plug (USP-Plug-US) by Brian Sitton

Great idea, poor execution

Need two smart outlets to plug in ISP modems as in some cases we will be hours away. It looked like a great solution, but unfortunately it didn't work. First you need to mess around with your main WiFi if you have a split network setup. Why? Because for some reason you need to enable the uplink connection monitor. This meant I had to destroy one of my Wi-Fi networks to get it online. Still no luck. Ok, next possible solution. You need to update the firmware on the device. Okay, that's also annoying because you need a laptop, but okay. One worked, one burned out. You can no longer turn it off with the button. Okay, other devices are smart enough to save two firmware images in case one fails, but I digress. We had a (theoretical) success in that the device booted up again. Okay, let's try to get it online! . Bad luck. At this point, sorry, I've wasted more time (several hours if you include searching through various items and fiddling with my network) than it's worth. I'd rather call someone and hide the key so they can use it to restart devices. I like other Ubiquiti hardware that I have customized. Even as a Cisco employee, I can see the elegance for a home user or small business. I like the UDM-Pro, the switches seem pretty decent and the access points are ok, especially for the price I'm getting. However, this mains plug belongs in the dustbin. I'll give it one star for the idea, that's all.

Cons
