Review on Champion 7989 Spark Plug - Double Platinum Power, Carton of 1 by Tim Thuss

Revainrating 1 out of 5

GARBAGE! Broken electrode, bent mass - complete garbage.

Champion 7989 appeared to be the answer to Motorcraft's poor spark plug design, but upon opening the box I found that each spark plug was in a small box and a couple of spark plugs were outside during delivery and just bounced around in the shipping carton. Upon inspection I found that many of them were warped and out of spec. This includes the end caps that were still in the champion's shipping carton as well as those that were removed during shipping. Well, I didn't bother putting them in my truck until much later because I knew how painful it would be if I bought them in 2011, but I finally made up my mind and put them in my truck in March 2013. Less than 1500 miles on these plugs has been bad for me and the fuel economy was terrible from the start. I went through all the standard spins. New spark plugs so there should be a coil so replace the coil and the problem persists. Cylinder #5 will not fire. I unplugged it to check if the electrode shield was loose, probably the porcelain insulator was cracked. Looking back at these plugs at Revain now, I see that they have pretty horrible reviews and seem to be failing prematurely for a LONG time! Maybe a new Motorcraft is what you need, but DO NOT buy it. Now I have to take out all those plugs and replace them with something else. What a waste of money.

Pros
  • V-notch ground electrode helps focus spark more sharply
Cons
  • Doubtful
