These gates pose a safety hazard in some cases - if your opening is the right size, the gate will fit with just a few inches of space on either side (like gap between blades) . However, there are only specific combinations for gates - they fit in an opening about four inches wider than the base gate and extension combination. While it "fits" for a wider opening, the gap between the outer rails and the wall becomes too big - so big my little dog just slipped through. The opening is too narrow for an optional extension but too wide for a single 12" extension. I can purchase another extension to try and get a custom fit, but that would be trial and error plus additional expense. This one Gates will not fit openings from 29" to 50" - they will only fit a certain number of openings in that range. If your opening is the wrong size, your child's head could get caught between the outside railing and the wall (or Your pet could easily slip through). Do your math to see if your opening will work within about 4" of the entire gate width and extension. The distance between the wall and the outer batten should be no more than about 2 3 /8" if you have a small child - that's the government recommended crib slat spacing anyway. I would be very careful with that if it was for a child. Wow au I always have to shell out the extra $$$ to make it work for my dog.
