Mom is in cognitive decline, she doesn't know where she is. She's been wandering around unsupervised for years, and that gets her into trouble. Once she was even hospitalized. So we tried childproof doorknobs and they didn't stop her, so I put those chains high up in the door where she wouldn't notice them and wouldn't know how to operate them. When she complains that she's trapped and can't get out, I know she's embarking on another unaccompanied odyssey. With a chain I can make sure she's wearing the right shoes, bring her walker, keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't get caught on anything. That little chain on every door has saved me and the neighbors from grief. No more falling into the yard hoping for kindness from strangers. It worked wonderfully. The next obvious purchase would be a door alarm if she ever finds out the chain.
