I unpacked the stones, sprayed them individually with a hose, then put them in a large bucket and rinsed them with water for about 20 minutes, draining the cloudy water from the bucket maybe 3 times. Then soak overnight and rinse again in the morning and they'll leave your aquarium sparkling clean as it was. They are also good for the pH of the water because they are calcium carbonate. They are also very easy to fold and place, which I really liked. I haven't tied them up because about once a month I'll be rearranging the rock for them to claim the territory.
