Strainer is great if you just wash your hands. But it's not so good if you brush your teeth. I remove it because toothpaste residue doesn't fit through small holes very well. If you want to fill the sink with water, you need to remove the strainer. So these are disadvantages. Otherwise it works great and keeps things from sliding down the drain. For example, rings and other little things that seem to slip.
