I have 2 800mA outdoor units and 2 old metal batteries that charged cars, motorbikes and alternators for 5-10 years. This HE outdoor unit worked for a day and then started blinking amber, green, amber, green and no output voltage. Tried two different batteries, same thing. I've never used it outside of the garage so it's not a weather related issue. Clearly defective or damaged, who knows? Sent it back and switched to BatteryMinder 2012 to try something new and was pleased. Gave 3 stars because all my other battery tenders work great. I even gave Jr. to my son's off-road motorcycle buyer who is still using it 6 years later. Maybe you just have a defect, or the new design has quality issues. Most of the reviews for this thing are 5 stars and along with the weather resistance I gave it a go.
