I just got this yesterday and was at first confused because, although it comes with a battery, I did not know how fresh it was and, or course, I had no way to test it. I was happy, by the way, that its battery is a standard AAA size. The directions which come with the tester are not very explicit but I finally realized I would see no reading until I actually tested a battery. The tester makes it very easy to do so I took an AA battery and it read fully charged. No number percentage is given, it's just a bar at the top divided into segments. You put your batteries in the slots indicated and they fit right in. To be sure the contact was the best it could be, I also held them in.Then came the surprise that the battery I had just put in - which showed 100% - showed nothing at all. I tested it again and everything was fine, so I tested a number more and saw that the strength indicator always turned off after a minute. So all was well. I find it infinitely better than any battery tester I've ever had before. I plan to buy a few more as gifts.
