I'm a self-taught welder who didn't appreciate what a difference having a wide shade range would make when selecting the self-darkening welding helmet I originally purchased with my MIG welder. With its 9-13 shade range I literally could often not see what I was doing and produced sloppy welds that reflected that fact. I decided to purchase the Forney Master Series because it offered a 5-13 shade range and, in use, I have been very pleased with the clarity. Not surprisingly, with the ability to see what I'm doing, my welding results immediately improved. The Forney Master Series is comfortable to wear and well worth the extra money over similar products with a shorter shade range.
