My area is quite rural so there is only one street light for the entire street. Even when walking with a flashlight at night, that's not particularly good enough. So glad to have a collar; I didn't carve it, I have a lab so I just put it on his head when it's time to go out at night. It's also useful when we're playing in the backyard at night since the porch lights don't illuminate the entire backyard. It's really bright, haven't charged it yet but we've used it about 3 times for 10-15 minutes each and once for about 20 minutes since we got it, we're trying to see how long the battery lasts .
