It took a bit of fiddling to get the battery in the remote right. The instructions in the remote control and the small instruction booklet do not make it clear which side of the battery is facing out. For the record, the negative side (-) faces the user. You must read the instructions and "pair" the remote control with the plug-in unit. The seller contacted me because they saw my review and said they would work on improving their recommendations. Pros: - Remote control through floors and walls - I hear a click at the plug when I turn it on and off - Inexpensive remote switch that I use on my patio heater to shut off the electricity around the house so nobody can just turn it on. This remote device is great for this type of use. Cons: - The instructions for installing the removed batteries are unclear as to which direction the battery is facing. This device works fine. I was under the impression that the unit they sent me was a return, sold as new. The plug was clearly worn, the three prong wire protector had been removed from the plug and a small piece of plastic preventing the battery from contacting the remote had been removed and was in the box. If you get a really "new" device, I think it's a normal product, but something strange happened to what I received. Works great, just looks a little "used". Your experience may vary. Look at the photo of the remote control and the size of the manual.
