If you are starting a full fledged portrait studio you might invest in a more expensive Pocket Wizard or similar but for basic use they are basic and do my job. I've looked through a few of these sets over the past few years, but so far it's been cheaper to replace than upgrade. For great portraits I use them on 2 umbrella stands with 2 very basic manual hot shoe flashes (Neewer TT560's are cheap and easy to use with simple up and down controls on the back but any hot shoe flash will do). Just make sure you remember to turn them off when you're done using them. I forgot a few times and later went back to dead batteries. Receivers only take 2 double A's and luckily I haven't had to change the transceiver's battery yet, I'm guessing it requires some sort of coin cell but it doesn't have an obvious battery compartment, probably just need to pry that off separately.
