Real metal to do the job. No plastic. The stand is definitely built to handle large TV's as indicated. They included 4 different screw sizes for attaching TV to the bracket, but I still had to purchase the right length screws for mine. Like most things, it's made in China so the instructions could use a little bit more proofreading for English readers. The smoked-glass base is very solid and serves as a shelf. The smaller shelf is made of metal and will hold one of your entertainment devices/players. I'm glad I bought this one.
