NATO belts are military belts. They must be very long so that they can be worn over large and bulky clothing. For example over a flight suit or wetsuit. Retaining rings at the top of the strap are used to hold excess strap material when the full length of the strap is not in use. To do this, thread the excess length of strap through the retaining rings, fold and tuck the excess under you. How the NATO strap works. This product is called a NATO strap, but it does not have extra length. The band is just long enough to fit both locking rings. There is no extra length to fold and pack away, making this strap basically a regular webbing strap with NATO style hardware. Since it looks like a NATO strap but serves none of the purposes of a NATO strap, it would be more correct to call it "NATO-style strap" or similar words.
