At first I was ready to toss it in the trash as a FAIL. NO non-sedated animal will put that on their tongue! Ear. was not read. Here's what I learned: Put it in your ear so the red light is in the ear. It has to stay red all the time to be read, and certainly not fast. You may need to move it to different locations to get a reliable reading. I first got SPO2 in the 80's but with pink tongue and gums. Play with it and move it around to find the "sweet spot" on your pet's ear.
