Just what I needed

I ordered a Curt Assure brake controller because my current controller is outdated and doesn't meet my current towing needs. I also ordered a Curt harness specifically for my truck. I chose the Assure because it's a complex braking system. The technology used includes a motion-sensing accelerometer designed to provide more controlled trailer braking. This system incorporates a three-axis motion sensor that responds to conditions in all three axes, providing smooth and rapid braking. By determining the pitch, roll and yaw of the tow vehicle, the controller can determine the best braking action required. This is of course a theory. I have not been in any braking situation where I could see the direct results of this technology, with the exception of going downhill where I could tell a difference in braking as the dispatcher knew the truck was pitching down. Like many brake controls, Assure offers proportional braking that applies the trailer's brakes with the same braking force applied to the tractor by the position of the brake pedal. There are several features that I like. The pressure-sensitive hand control allows me to press a button that applies the brakes manually, and the harder I press, the harder the brakes kick in. I can make both gain and load adjustments, which allows me to customize the controller for different trailers as needed. The controller issues diagnostic warnings such as connection errors or disconnection warnings. When setting up the trailer, the controller runs an automatic alignment and calibration process, which I assume should properly align the accelerometer. Kurt has an online video showing the installation process that I found very helpful.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • So so
