Cake Boss? Clay Boss!

I've been looking for an affordable ceramic decorating platform for a while now. It didn't occur to me that cake decorators have the same needs as people who decorate ceramics until I watched a "Cake Boss" show. So when I saw this, I put it on the list.My first impression is that it is a beefy and sturdy mechanism. The platter is cast aluminum with a silicone rubber base to keep it steady. It is advertised as a 12-inch platform which it is, but the last 1/2 inch has a bevel which may or may not affect cake decorating. For ceramics, not an issue since it is bigger than the diameter of my throwing wheel. The bearing makes a nice and smooth turning motion. Since I'm using it for ceramics, I'm concerned that clay may get in there and gum it up, but I can be careful to not let that happen. It comes with some cake decorating tools: an offset spatula, a smoothing scraper type affair and an aluminum decorating tool. I religated the spatula and smoothing scraper to the kitchen but kept the decorating tool to experiment on the wheel. The icing comb is stamped aluminum with a plastic film you need to peel off. It is labeled as a Whipped Cream decorator, but I imagine it could be used for icing as well.Anyway, I can say that this would be a pretty competent and sturdy cake decorating platform, but also a discount clay decorating platform as well.
