I currently have 4 planted aquariums all using sand tank substrate and 2 Finnex Stingray lights. They worked 7 hours a day with different plants (Crypten, Vallisneria, Bacopa, Nepenthes) and had fantastic results. The lamps are placed low above the aquarium so that the room is not dazzled and they provide natural light for both fish and plants. The lamps are silent, only heat up when touched (no hot spots) and are incredibly energy efficient. I'd recommend double (two lights) if you're going high tech (CO2), but other than that, one light lets you grow whatever plants you want in your tank.
