Generic hardness test strips don't work at all - they just stay bright yellow like they were before the test (no color on the chart). A chlorine strip test might work β at least the readings for tap water and pitcher filter water are different. However, one of the readings is yellow, which is not on the chart. test and have nothing to do with anything on the chart (they are dark dark and light gray). With the pH, alkalinity, iron, and copper tests, it's hard to tell if they worked or not. The packaging and instructions are pretty clear, but it's all useless without working test strips. Maybe my test kit is just old but doesn't have a "Use By" date on it.
