Not a perfect connection but works most of the time

Sometimes my MacBook doesn't fully connect to the monitor and its features when my laptop is already on. It shows the display but does not connect to the attached mouse and keyboard. I have to hard reset my MacBook to make it work. This happens about 20% of the time. Also, I've had a few random restarts of my Macbook lately. This doesn't give me enough information to decipher the cause, but they only occur when the adapter is connected to an external monitor.
