If I paid $100 for this razor I would give it only four stars or maybe three and a half stars depending on value for money. But for a quarter, it's a great tool! After reading the negative reviews here and on other sites I came to the conclusion that I need to tweak and maybe even change a lot to make it useful. I might even have to throw it away or send it back. I decided to take a chance because I really didn't want to spend $100 when I could get a useful tool for $25, even if it took a little longer than a regular honing alignment setup. Of course the $100 version is a lot prettier, which is saying something, but I just wanted a functional tool. First thing I noticed was that the machining on the front was a bit rough, right, but I figured some sanding/machining would be added. friction and make it difficult to pull the spoke. A few smacks on the diamond stone broke that rush. Next I did as usual, smoothing the back of the iron and sharpening the edge, another 5 minutes. I reinstalled this iron, making sure it was completely out of my mouth, then lowered it until it caught on the wood by almost every edge. before taking it apart and doing some of the more extreme work (installation - fixing - adjustment) recommended by others. To my delight it worked well, no chatter and pulled a good oak curl! I kept going until I got a nice concave curve, so I need a round face razor. I've tried it on several other hardwoods and softwoods, all with the same good results. I wanted this one because my flat razor just won't cut it if my shape is concave (pun intended). It's already a very good tool and I'm sure that with a little tweaking it will be a great tool. I have no idea why others complain about having nothing but gossip! Shaving with the needles takes some practice, which can be the problem. If you've never used razor pins before, you probably shouldn't start with a round face. If you want to handle the firewood, start with a jackknife. A razor shave is best for removing the remains of a cleaning knife. Don't be greedy and this tool will serve you well.
