Good buy at $20. Toner and probe are good. They're not as strong as my Fox+Hound, but way better than my $25 Extech. I was able to tone a 100ft Cat5e line on a patch panel fairly easily. The tone generator is very powerful and will transmit crosstalk in 6+ lines, but it's not that hard to narrow it down to the correct cable on the patch panel. Forget it in a close bond. Too much crosstalk. Another disadvantage is that the tone generator quickly drains from 9 volt batteries. The wire test works great. You really need to read a poorly translated manual to learn how to check line continuity, polarity, and tip + ring. The alligator skin clips are a joke too. I also like the on/off button on the stick so I can tint without holding the button down. Keep in mind that this is not a professional tool. If you use tone lines and tone lines in bundles regularly, spend $$$ and buy Triplet Fox+hound or Tempo/greenlee. These probes are much more powerful, more accurate, much less crosstalk, have more tracking capabilities, and don't use batteries. But for occasional use or to keep in the IT department as a backup, it's fine. Update: After using the probe with different tone generators and testing them all with a multimeter, the secret ingredient to this kit's performance is the tone generator. The probe is as weak as other cheap sub-$30 probes, but the tone generator outputs a 7V signal on all 4 pairs, while tempos, random fluctuations (and other cheap ones) output a 3-4- Output V signal Pairs 1 pair There is not only sound on 8 wires but not on the pairs connected to the end of the switch so there is no continuity when it is connected to the switch. This makes it LOUD. The upside of this is that you can get a loud tone from a very cheap probe because you're essentially blasting the whole cable with the tone. The downside to this is a lot of crosstalk and short battery life.
