Real mother of pearl?

I like the look of this box, but the quality is not the best (and I saw a ton if them at Home Goods for like $10 the week after I purchased from revain). The 'mother of pearl' seems to be 'peeling' in certain places, which makes me wonder if it's really inlaid. It almost looks painted on? There's a very thick, clear glaze-like layer on top of everything, too, which makes it look pretty chintzy up close. Overall, it's a cute box, but don't expect great quality!
