Review on BSN TRUE MASS Protein Chocolate Milkshake by Sasha Hsiao

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great flavor and blending in a large capacity easy seal pouch

For the past 20+ years I have used many brands and types of protein powders including Syntha-6 solely as a protein supplement. I haven't bought or used a gainer since my late teens when I started lifting weights. Based on my experiences with other BSN products and reviews of Revain elsewhere, I decided to try True-Mass for a specific purpose. Some of this may be a combination of genetics and daily meds, he's interested in weight gain. As many of us know, the only way to do this is to increase your caloric intake. He is also a picky eater without an increased appetite, so weight/mass gain comes into play. Assuming he remains committed to the process, I will update this review with progress and findings. In terms of mixability and flavor, I think it's pretty good compared to the countless pounds of protein powders I've consumed. Let's start with vanilla ice cream in a 12 pound bag. Ironically, this is the same price as a 6lb container. I've read some reviews that the pouches don't taste as good as the 6lb containers or just plain bad. I haven't experienced that, I tasted a lot worse and I personally think it would be very easy to drink 1-2 shakes a day. Vanilla is also suitable for additions such as peanut butter, nuts, fruits, etc. that must not be paired with other flavors. I mixed several 1-scoop servings into 8-10 ounces of water (the instructions say 16 ounces for 2 scoops) or whole milk using both a beverage blender and shaker. The results are similar, resulting in an easy-to-drink consistency—definitely not a heavy sediment like some powers or meal replacements. I've added a tablespoon of peanut butter to one and it tastes pretty good. While it mixes fairly well in a blender bottle, it's definitely coarser than using a blender. Other key reasons to buy True-Mass over big competitors like ON Serious Mass and Pro Gainer, both of which have great reviews and similar calories and protein per serving, are: price per serving, more fat (perfect for my son's age and size), complex carbohydrate blend including oats, which I find better and healthier than any maltodextrins.
