I took this to plug into one of my kitchen outlets as I needed a USB plug for a small kitchen tool (today everything comes with AC USB), but I did. You don't want to give up the entire power plug for the USB device. This little socket system did the trick, I know it's supposed to have a phone holder, but the YMMV is there because it's not very long, so it depends on what phone you have. I don't need this "feature" either, but I just wanted to test it myself for the purpose of testing. Overall, this is a 3-prong surge protector/adapter and has worked well for me since I plugged it in. I got my boyfriend a bigger one and he had no problem with it either, so far so good.
