The instructions tell you to replace every few months, but I use a stiff bell brush dipped in white vinegar and Dawn soap and I place it in a saucepan of water, bring the water temperature to near boiling and let it cool. . This will kill any bacteria and squeeze out the sludge. I take a bucket about 4 inches deep with clean water, place the bells in the water and connect an air hose to squeeze the air out of any residue left and to make sure no soap gets into the bell. I haven't had to change one in almost a year, not a bad saving if you have multiple aquariums.
