I have had the same size gray magnetic float for over 20 years and it still works great. The one I just received is not the same quality. The new magnet is weaker, the plastic sleeve seems less durable, and the felt on the outer magnet doesn't cover the entire surface (the gray one loses some of the felt around the edges but can be seen from a distance). photos where it was used for masking and still does some). We got the second one because we built a special tank with a refuge as a floor tank. I have to be a lot more careful with the new magnetic float or it will come loose and since the magnet isn't that strong I had to put my hand inside the tank to make it snap back into place. That destroys the point where it floats so you don't have to go into the tank. As for the felt that doesn't cover the edges of the outer magnet, we haven't had any major issues with it so far - a few stains here and there, but we've got the glass and so far they're easy to remove. I think with acrylic it can be easily scratched. If we have to, I think we can buy some sticky felt and fix it ourselves.
