This adapter works great with almost any hard drive. It's so comfortable I bought two. Having used this on 20+ hard drives there are a few things to note. You must turn on the hard drive before connecting the USB cable (about 15-20 seconds). This gives the hard drive time to spin up. With newer SATA HDDs and SSDs this is not so important. This is required for older IDE drives. There are adapters for connecting solid state drives to a USB port. This isn't one of them. Power MUST be on for operation. If the hard drive is really old (e.g. 1995 or older) this may not work. Not because the adapter isn't working, but because the hard drive can't send its information to your computer. There are two other hard drives where this didn't work right away. One of these was an early model SATA drive that required a power plug just like older IDE drives. The power cord on this unit was too short to reach the plug. I was able to get a power cord extension that allowed me to power up the drive. The other drive was an old Maxtor 1.8GB drive. The connector was embedded deep enough into the drive that the adapter did not stick to the drive. This is the only drive I've seen in this form.
