Mount as intended with the metal bracket to the ceiling in a small "n" rather than a "u" shape as the holes will not align properly unless you do otherwise poke holes, but it does more harm than good, believe me. I also had a bottom in the middle of an electrical wire hole that powers the wire wherever it's coming from so it doesn't touch the ceiling, but my dad says if the bottom touches the drywall it shouldn't matter but this is my father. He's a lot smarter than me, but I don't want to be the guy that "daddy said" was like a reverse water boy lol. I have also used them to replace the fluorescent lights in our kitchen as well as my bedroom and the pendants are a good size, not too small and not too big. Maybe 6 inches? I didn't measure them. They work great. And one of those pendant lights at Home Depot was about $20 for white the last time I visited, so getting 4 for $20 is a bargain, and if you need to paint them white or whatever, you can do that too.
